The Department of Dance at UGA cultivates a diverse, inclusive, and stimulating community where creativity, individuality, and mutual respect flourish. Our curriculum challenges students to grow in technique and artistry while developing the critical, theoretical, and creative perspectives essential for a career in the performing arts and related fields. Our graduates are versatile, self-directed global citizens, equipped to navigate the complexities of the 21st century and lead meaningful, impactful lives.

The Department of Dance prepares students for a career in dance. Upon completing the A.B. degree in dance, students will be able to:

  • Critically synthesize ideas and movement by evaluating texts, the body in motion, and creative works within historical, social, cultural, educational, and artistic contexts.
  • Compose original dances using diverse tools, principles, and perspectives to communicate clear artistic intent.
  • Demonstrate technical mastery and body awareness, including alignment, efficient movement patterns, core engagement, and the vocabulary and aestetics of multiple dance genres.
  • Express artistry and presence through musicality, projection, focus, and a willingness to take creative risks.

Through its curriculum and student-centered research, the Department of Dance advocates for dance and the arts — on campus, in Athens, across Georgia, and around the world — fostering a vibrant culture of creativity, innovation, and artistic excellence.
