The Glass of the Jungle

Photo taken by: Nicholas Alexander (Current Student)
Location: El Bosque Eterno de Los Niños, Puntarenas, Costa Rica
Words from the photographer: “This photo is special to me because it represents the degree of specialization within the jungle while also highlighting the fragility of these amazing creatures. The frog in this photo is an Emerald Glass Frog (they are called glass frogs because you can see through them like glass). In this photo, you can see the stomach of the frog as the darker silhouette within the frog. Being see-through helps these frogs blend into the jungle foliage, which increases their fitness. When I found this frog, it struck me just how small and fragile they are. Given the ruthlessness and chaos of the jungle, it amazes me that they can survive at all, yet here this frog was clinging onto this tiny stem for me to find. It made me reflect on how important it is that we conserve these places on Earth, as these organisms have evolved to be perfectly adapted to this environment. Changes to these environments can have very dramatic impacts on their ability to survive. This frog represents to me the jungle as a whole, being so beautiful while also being so delicate.”
Why Give to Vote?
The University of Georgia Latino Alumni Council is bringing Bulldog pride into focus with a special photo contest to support its scholarship fund. Ten scholars, past and present, have stepped in front of the camera and submitted photos that reflect their journeys. Now it’s your turn to get involved.
To vote, click the image of the photo you want to support, then click “Donate Now.” The photo with the most dollars raised wins — so the more you give, the more votes you cast for your favorite photo. There’s no limit! Even $1 makes an impact on both our scholarship and the contest.
The winning picture with the most funds raised will be featured on a custom LAC-branded postcard.
Every vote is more than a favorite photo — it’s an investment in future Bulldog leaders. Your support helps create access to higher education while celebrating the incredible scholars who represent the strength and spirit of our community.
Voting ends Friday, May 15.
