College of Environment and Design Dr. Stephen Ramos Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Stephen John Ramos was a beloved professor, scholar, mentor and friend whose work and spirit left an enduring impact on students, colleagues and communities worldwide.
To honor his life and legacy, the College of Environment and Design at the University of Georgia is establishing the Stephen John Ramos Graduate Scholarship in Urban Planning. This scholarship will support graduate students pursuing urban planning — students who share Stephen’s passion for understanding cities, infrastructure and communities and who seek to make a meaningful difference through thoughtful planning and design.
Dr. Ramos joined the CED faculty in 2011 and helped elevate the college’s urban planning program into an internationally recognized center of scholarship and teaching. An accomplished global scholar, his research explored port cities, infrastructure, logistics, energy transitions and planning history, connecting local landscapes with global systems.
Beyond his remarkable academic accomplishments, Stephen is remembered most for the way he invested in people. He was deeply committed to his students and believed that their ideas and perspectives were the lifeblood of planning education. He challenged them to think critically, work collaboratively and imagine better futures for communities around the world.
The Stephen John Ramos Graduate Scholarship in Urban Planning will ensure that his passion for learning, teaching and public engagement continues to inspire future generations of planners. Each recipient of this scholarship will carry forward Stephen’s belief that planning is ultimately about people — the communities we serve and the futures we build together.
