Celebrate Bat Week October 26 – October 31.

This Bat Week, help UGA ecologists give Georgia’s bats a place to call home.

Halloween is all about things that go bump in the night. But some of Georgia’s most remarkable nighttime creatures deserve more curiosity than fear!

Georgia is home to 16 bat species. These night-flyers help keep ecosystems healthy by eating insects and pollinating plants. But habitat loss, declining insect populations and a very contagious fungal disease, white-nose syndrome, threaten their future. So much so that several of Georgia’s bats are federally endangered.

Bulldogs for Bats is raising $5,000 to help protect these misunderstood mammals through habitat conservation and community education.

Led by the Odum School’s Tamika Lunn Lab, Bulldogs for Bats will map bat houses around Athens, document their condition and repair or replace those that need attention. Cameras will help our student ecologists learn more about when bats use these roosts and how they behave. Working with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Lab will also create educational materials and activities to help Georgians discover safe, responsible ways to conserve bats.

• $50 repairs an existing bat house.
• $100 builds a new bat house.
• $250 secures a wildlife camera.
• $500 makes mapping, web maintenance and public service possible.

We’re calling on all Bulldogs to protect these tiny eco-champions! Bat houses give bats a warm place to roost and raise their young. Well-designed, properly placed bat houses provide valuable shelter as their habitat and food sources decline, giving them a home that isn’t your attic. Your support can help Georgia’s bats thrive!

This Halloween, let’s Hunker Down for Bats! Your gift will help UGA students learn more about our native bats, protect their homes, and inspire more Bulldogs to become part of the solution.

Go Dawgs! Go Bats!

All donors will receive a Bulldogs for Bats decal! Gifts of $70 or more receive an Odum School t-shirt featuring a Southeastern Big Eared Bat.
