Fatime is the oldest of four girls, a first-generation American and the first in her family to pursue higher education. Now a first-year JD candidate at the UGA School of Law, Fatime reflects on her journey with gratitude for the support she received through the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship.

The Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship recognizes and supports exceptional students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. This award provides $5,000 annually, along with academic programs and growth opportunities, and is renewable for up to three years, contingent on maintaining academic standards.

“I am truly thankful for this scholarship and what it represents for first-generation students like me,” said Fatime. “I believe the experience of being a first-generation student is something that deserves recognition, and I’m glad the university has acknowledged it with this scholarship fund.”

This scholarship allowed Fatime to put financial concerns aside and be present in furthering her career. One key opportunity was her participation in the Washington Semester Program the fall after receiving the scholarship. The funding helped offset some of the costs of the study-away program, enabling her to fully engage in this experiential learning opportunity. During the semester, she interned with an investigator at a public defender’s office.

“I have dreamed of becoming a lawyer since high school, but interning in Washington, D.C. last fall solidified the direction I want to take in my legal career,” said Fatime. “Many factors influenced my decision to choose UGA Law, particularly its strong ranking and the affordability offered through scholarships.”

The following spring, Fatime was selected to be the student speaker at the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship Banquet. This gave her the opportunity to meet representatives from The Coca-Cola Company and connect with other scholarship recipients.

“I had the privilege of speaking at the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship Banquet, which gave me a chance to reflect on my college journey just before graduation,” said Fatime. “That experience was incredibly meaningful to me. I’m grateful for the opportunity, and for the support of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program.”

Fatime’s journey at UGA is a testament to her dedication and talent as well as the efficacy of need-based support. As she continues to pursue her legal career, she hopes to one day give back by supporting other students in need of financial aid.
