In November 2024, thanks to the generosity of donors, the University of Georgia passed 1,000 endowed, need-based scholarships.
Twelve years ago, there were just 195 UGA need-based scholarships. A significant motivator in this growth has been the Georgia Commitment Scholarship program, which launched in 2017 and has created over 740 scholarships. All of this is a big part of why UGA awarded more than $9 million in need-based aid in the 2023-2024 academic year.
But numbers only go so far. The success of need-based scholarships at UGA can best be seen in the stories of those who have received it.
Stories like these can be found in every college, school, residence hall, and classroom across the university: individuals who become the best versions of themselves because of generous donors who opened a door that circumstance had locked. Each story and each scholar is a testament to what is possible when the University of Georgia, UGA supporters, and hopeful students commit to a better future.
The university is proud of reaching the 1,000 need-based scholarship milestone. It is much more proud of the thousands of Bulldogs, empowered by those scholarships, who will create stronger communities, healthier people and a brighter world.
