Welcome New Members

Thank you to all who joined us on August 16 to welcome our 27 new members to the Board of Visitors.

We are grateful that this impressive group has chosen the University of Georgia as one of their causes to champion. Our on-campus reception gave them the opportunity to learn about the University’s mission and recent initiatives from President Jere W. Morehead and meet a few of the students that make this institution so special.

MADDIE DILL (AB ’18)

The University of Georgia is the largest public university in the nation to require every undergraduate student to participate in critical hands-on learning experiences.

Experiential learning is required at UGA because we know the value of firsthand experience. Internships, research, study abroad, and service-learning encourage students to be inquisitive and use their talents to seek solutions to everyday issues.

After studying abroad in six countries with the help of her Foundation Fellowship, Maddie Dill is determined to improve lives through a career in international policy.

Watch the video to learn how Maddie’s future has been impacted by her experiential learning opportunities.

William Kisaalita

Where Nsangi Racheal Sebuufu lives in rural Uganda, electricity is scarce. That means much of the milk collected in the evenings (about half of all milk produced in Uganda during the rainy season) is wasted because there’s no way to keep it cool overnight.

A native Ugandan himself, William Kisaalita, a professor of engineering at the University of Georgia, was determined to find a way to maximize small farms’ dairy profits. Using his background in mechanical and chemical engineering, Kisaalita and his team developed a cooling device that doesn’t require in-home electricity. Learn more about Kisaalita’s solution.

It Starts with Georgia

In 2006, Elbert County was $2 million in debt. Their volunteer fire department was stretched to its limits and infrastructure upkeep had fallen by the wayside. With the help of UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, Elbert County has eradicated its massive debt, built five new fire stations, and improved roadways – making it an attractive home for new industries.

UGA Mentorship Program

The university is committed to creating a mentorship program in which students will be matched with volunteer mentors who can offer advice and guidance. Not only is this a great opportunity for students, but it’s also a way for alumni and others to connect to UGA in a meaningful way. The university is currently interviewing candidates for the position of Associate Director, UGA Mentor Program. The pilot program will launch in January 2019.
